FAQ:
When is the best time to view the bears?
- The
bear viewing is great from early May to the end of September. This
unusual reliability for viewing is due to the amazing abundance of food
sources available along the Katmai coast. The bears have no reason to
go elsewhere for food. To observe mating behavior May and June are
best. For fishing behavior late June to September is best.
Is it safe?
- The
short answer first, YES bear viewing is safe. Confrontations between
bears and humans can be avoided when people have a clear understanding
of bear behavior and show the bears respect. We are very predictable in
our viewing behavior and this allows the bears to be comfortable with
our presence.
What should I bring with me?
- MEDICATION: if you use it, bring enough for 2 days just incase the weather delays us
- Water
- Lunch & snack (no fish)
- Day pack (you will carry all you bring)
- Waterproof boots (calf high, rubber)
- Bug dope (DEET)
- Camera & film or memory cards & batteries
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Hat
- Rain gear, jacket & pants (Lightweight coated nylon)
- Layered clothing, dress for cool & wet, remove layers for warm weather (windproof fleece)
- Extra sox
Are there any physical requirements?
- We
will walk 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the beach through grassy meadow or
tundra to a vantage point to observe the bears. The ground surface is
very irregular in many places. You must be able to walk the total
distance of up to 1 mile without difficulty.
What is a typical itinerary?
- The
day begins at 7am to 9am at the Homer airport. A 60 to 75 minute flight
to the southwest ends at a beach on the Katmai coast where the bears
are. We then walk 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the beach through grassy meadow
or tundra to a vantage point to observe the bears. After about three
hours of time with the bears we return to Homer. The trip is completed
about 5 hours after departure.
What is the maximum party size?
- There
are six passenger seats available, but usually weight limitations
dictate that only five seats are used. The maximum party size is six
with one guide.
